Saturday night in Metro Detroit was quite a mess. Almost a foot of snow fell making the roads almost impassable. The weather didn’t stop the diehard hometown fans from seeing the Michigan Madness tour.
Detroit’s own Kaleido, fronted by Christina Chriss, kicked off the show. Chriss took the stage by storm, showcasing the clean, sharp vocals that the home crowd has come accustomed to. She was backed up by Joey Fava –drums, Cody Morales –bass, Ronnie Rosolino –guitar, and Jamie Allen Burnham –guitar. They were clearly a crowd favorite as a big part of the audience sang along with Chriss word for word. Chriss thanked the crowd for helping them win the 89x People’s Choice Award for many nights in a row. As Chriss stated Saturday night: Rock is not dead.
Kaleido Set List:
“Unbreakable”
“Nice Bitch”
“On One”
“Love And War”
“My Rock and Roll”
Wilson rushed the stage to the excitement of the large crowd. The Fuckery was running rampant Saturday night as the Detroit based band played with gritty intensity throughout their set. Wilson consists of Chad Nicefield- vocals, Jason Spencer- guitar, Kyle Landry- guitar, James Lascu-bass, and Matt Puhy- drums. They performed several songs off of their 2015 release Right to Rise including “Satisfy Me”, “The Flood”, and the title track “Right to Rise”. They also covered “Hair of the Dog” by Nazareth.
It was my first time seeing Wilson and it definitely won’t be my last. The high energy set was truly impressive; it was too short and left me wanting more. The bearded Nicefield is full of personality and it showed on stage. This band goes balls out, giving their all on stage and makes it a fun, entertaining show. I cannot wait to see them again.
Grand Rapids’ favorite rock band came out to the roar of the near capacity crowd. You can’t go anywhere in Michigan without hearing a Pop Evil tune playing in the background. The band, made up of Leigh Kakaty-vocals, Davey Grahs- guitar, Nick Fuelling-guitar, Chachi Riot-drums, and Matt DiRito-bass, are huge supporters of all things Michigan – something they are quick to talk about whenever they give an interview. Pop Evil opened their set with the 2013 Billboard #1 hit “Deal with the Devil” to get the crowd pumped up right out of the gate.
The band played a packed set of their hit songs and some songs off their recently released UP album. The highlight of the night was the cover of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” The crowd loudly singing along word for word. The enthusiastic crowd was also treated to an acoustic “Stepping Stone” played from the crowd. They are just starting out on the latest tour, there’s plenty of time left to catch a show near you.
