Thrice at The Fillmore Detroit

Stronger than ever after a four year hiatus!

After a four-year hiatus, Thrice came back to Detroit Rock City in support of their newest album, To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere.  The Orange County, California band consists of Members: Dustin Kensrue – vocals/guitar, Teppei Teranishi – guitar, Ed Breckenridge – bass, and Riley Breckenridge – drums.

This show was originally scheduled for St. Andrews Hall. However, with the growing popularity of Thrice, the show was moved to a larger venue The Fillmore, in Detroit.  The almost sold out show was packed solid.  The front row was a mix of young fans, both guys and girls, many wearing Thrice concert t-shirts.

They opened up the show with a recent song “Hurricane” from the new record To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere and moved right on to “Hurricane”, from 2003’s The Artist in the Ambulance album.  They played a 20-song set mixed with tracks from all of their albums.  The crowd waited in suspense to hear the new single, “Black Honey.”  It appeared that everyone in the crowd was singing along word for word with Kensrue. “Black Honey” is currently the # 1 song on Sirius XM Octane’s Big Guns countdown and has brought Thrice many of new fans, including me!

Kensrue is a power house on vocals. His crisp clean voice carried throughout the gorgeous concert theatre.  Teranishi and Breckenridge are a dynamic duo on bass and guitars.  Riley Breckenridge absolutely destroyed it on the drums.   Thrice performed like they never took a single day off, the melodies just flow off the stage.

After a short step from the platform, the band came back out for two much requested encores; “The Artist In The Ambulance”, the title track off of their 2003 album and “In Years To Come”, from 2002’s release The Illusion Of Safety.  The incredible set closed with the 2005 release, “The Earth Will Shake”.

Providing direct support on the Thrice tour was LaDispute the post hardcore band from Grand Rapids, MI. The band consists of vocalist Jordan Dreyer, drummer Brad Vander Lugt, guitarist Chad Morgan-Sterenberg and bass guitarist Adam Vass. They were founded in 2004 and have released 3 studio albums and numerous EP’s. They entered the dimly lit stage full of energy, Dreyer screaming out his lyrics as he jumped all over the stage. The energy flowing through this band was contagious. All Our Bruised Bodies and the Whole Heart Shrinks.

The crowd was really into the music, singing along with Dreyer.  A lot of fans traveled the two-hour drive from their home town and packed the front row. LaDispute didn’t disappoint. They put on a great show!

Setlist:

“Harder Harmonies”
“Woman (In Mirror)”
“Scenes from Highways 1981-2009”
“For Mayor in Splitsville”
“Stay Happy There”
“Woman (Reading)”

Gates, from New Jersey opened up the show on Wednesday night. Gates is a five-piece American post rock band from New Brunswick, New Jersey, consisting of Kevin Dye vocals, Dan King -guitar, Mike Maroney -bass, Ethan Koozer -guitar and Daniel Crapanzano –drums. They are on tour in support for their new album Parallel Live.

Gates put on a great show, the stage full of talented musicians.   They took a more mellow approach with a softer sound which I really enjoyed.  I definitely recommend you make one of their shows soon!  I think we will be seeing a lot more from this band.

Setlist:

“The Thing That Would Save You”
“Habit”
“Low”
“Shiver”
“Eyes”
“Not My Blood”
