Shrek Is Love, Vol. 1: This Is My Swamp

Have you ever loved a movie or musical, or even a TV show, so much that you started a band based on it and started writing songs that revolved around it? Well, the guys in Shrek is Love kind of did just that.

Shrek Is Love is a four-piece R&B group creating smooth songs all about Shrek. Yes, the big green ogre from animated movie fame (and Broadway fame, I suppose). The album is fun and whimsical, although short. The album being Volume 1: This Is My Swamp. It’s a fun and fantastical three-songs about Shrek related topics, with a jazzy soul sound.

The members of Shrek Is Love are Michael Mayo on vocals, Jacob Mann on keyboards, Nick Campbell on bass, and Christian Euman on drums. According to the press release, here is the story of how this band was born:

“After meeting in 2015 and playing the Remix to “Ignition” by R. Kelly at the Thelonious Monk Institute Room at UCLA, [the group] booked Shrek is Love’s debut show at the Blue Whale. At the time of the booking they had not written any music; however, their love of Shrek spawned a legendary 2-hour, thoroughly composed tribute to the best animated movie of all time. Thus, Shrek is Love was born.”

This debut EP was released in February and has regularly gotten attention on Bandcamp, which is where you can purchase and listen to this fun collection of songs. The songs are “Lord Farquaad”, “This is My Swamp”, and “Fiona”.

What’s appealing about these three songs, and why you should check them out, is that they are clever and soulful. The first song is fun and tells the story of Lord Farquaad, whom most of us dislike. “This Is My Swamp” is the fan favorite. And the EP finishes off with a lovely love song about “Fiona.”

The group intends to release more songs soon.
