Stovepipe's Easy On the Leather

Grand Rapids’ one-man-band great Stovepipe Stover has done it again – he’s released some clever, awesome, and addictive tunes. Well, right now one of them is available for your listening pleasure (on Bandcamp – see link below). The album release show is scheduled for the 17th of June (follow him on Bandcamp, and you’ll be one of the first to know when there’s something new to listen to).

Stovepipe isn’t just a musical genius, he also makes some pretty swell soaps and beard-care items using natural ingredients. This three-song EP, “Easy On the Leather,” actually comes out with a new bar of soap release, all in the name of Matthew McConaughey. Yes, you read that right.

The first release from the EP is titled “Alright, Alright, Alright.” (Sound familiar?) Stovepipe’s usual folky sound emits massively from this track, from the very first note. His rugged vocals are a delight, and the somewhat positive vibe of this song is pretty inspiring. You really need to just listen to the track – it’s great. If life’s got you down, just say it… alright, alright, alright. Oh, and the guitar solo is sweet.

“Just Keep Livin’ (L-I-V-I-N)” is a short musical diddy that has kind of a dark undertone to it. It’s a little western, a little trippy, and a lot cool.

“My Hero’s Always Ten Years Away” is extremely deep. You really need to listen to the lyrics on this one. I love the premise behind the lyrics – you should always be your own hero. It’s hard to stop listening to this track. It’s a bit of a tear-jerker, yet it’s also an inspirational tome about life and hopes of the future. Have some tissue handy for this one.

Amazing. 5+ stars.
