Michael P. Cullen’s ‘Black Dog’

Michael P. Cullen’s ‘Black Dog’

His voice runs deep, as does his inspirations in the musical world. His sound can be compared to Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen, one of his inspirations. His musical styling is much like that of the projects of Michael Gira (Angels of Light, Swans) and Tom Waits. He is classic, intriguing, talented, mystifying. His newest song, “Black Dog” even mentions Cohen in the lyrics.

‘Black Dog’ is the opening track from Cullen’s newest endeavor, True Believer. By taking a quick jog to the link below you can hear a magnificent live version of this song. Cullen, backed by the Soul Searchers (his band of talented musicians), recorded this particular version in Sydney (Cullen is Australian) in front of an actual audience at the Lazybones Lounge.

It’s kind of a haunting song. It’s a song that anyone who likes any of the aforementioned bands or musicians will be sure to fall in love with. If just listening to the live recording isn’t enough, you can also watch it on YouTube. I am looking forward to hearing the whole album, I have a feeling it will be a new favorite and will have me dusting off my old Angels of Light and Swans albums.
