The Magpie Salute At The Mercury Ballroom 8/24/2017

The Magpie Salute presents a musical feast in Louisville with an outstanding mix of old and new music.

Formed in late 2016, and on an extensive inaugural tour, The Magpie Salute is the definition of real rock and roll music. This 10-piece outfit was put together by The Black Crowes co-founder Rich Robinson (guitar) includes former Black Crowes members Marc Ford (guitar) and Sven Pipien (bass) as well as drummer Joe Magistro, Nico Bereciartua (guitar) and Matt Slocum (keyboard) from Robinson’s previous solo endeavors. Lead singer, John Hogg and a trio of beautiful voices provided by Charity White, Adrien Reju and Katrine Ottosen elevate the songs and add a freshness that is indicative of what this band has to offer. The Magpie Salute harkens back to the days of The Band, The Allman Brothers and the like when the stage was filled with talented musicians feeding off each other, jamming together and playing from the heart.

The Magpie Salute began the night without an opener, getting right down to business with the 1st official Magpie song, “Omission”. From that point on they treated the crowd, both Black Crowe fans and music lovers in general, to some down to earth rock and roll, with elements of blues and southern rock throughout. Included were “A Change of Mind” and “Idle Time” from Mark Ford, and soulful covers of Rod Stewart’s “Gasoline Alley” and the Faces “Rollin Over”. As expected, there were plenty of Black Crowes tunes on offer. The Magpie Salute changes their set list from show to show and the crowd was pleased to hear some familiar Black Crowes favorites such as “Go Tell The Congregation”, “Another Roadside Tragedy”, “Good Morning Captain” and “Walk Believer Walk”. People danced and sang as they enjoyed these amazing musicians having a great time doing something they clearly loved doing.

Their final song of the night ended things on a high note when they performed, The Black Crowes hit and definite fan favorite, “Jealous Again”, which saw everyone with their hands in the air while they sang along. Before the night ended, Rich Robinson encouraged everyone to bring 2 or 3 friends the next time they come to town, so “we can get this thing rolling.” With their self-named first release out in June, and a tour that runs through November, it’s safe to say The Magpie Salute will have no trouble getting this thing rolling.
