Josh West is a young musician from Glendale, AZ releasing his first solo album, Proof of Concept. Spending the first 8 years of his career collaborating with his dad, fellow musician Glen West, he had a big break by being a contestant on season 12 of The Voice, where he had turnarounds from all 4 judges, and eventually worked with Adam Levine until the Top 20.
Josh West takes a lot of his inspiration from 90’s alternative music, and his album is a great blend of inspirations. As a 90’s baby, I like this album.
His first track, “Running in Circles,” is a favorite. It begins with a simple guitar that reminds me of so many 90’s era bands, it’s hard to pick one. The lyrics resonate with me as an adult in the rat-race of life. “I’m feeling so tired. I’m running in circles.”
Is It Me adds a bluesy riff with the rhythm guitar, and Josh’s voice perfectly hits the scale of notes that jumps high to low within one line of lyrics. “Fable Time” is a slower track that can become an anthem to working adults, opening with the lyrics “Writing in an office chair, wishing I was out somewhere under open skies.”
Proof of Concept gives a feeling of nostalgia with its 90’s alternative vibe. It’s an easy listen with soft melodies, and a smooth and steady voice.
