I recently got the chance to sit down with singer Davey Suicide at his 4/20/2016 show at the Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, Michigan. He is currently on tour with Twizted.

Side Stage Magazine: I wanted to start out saying I love your latest single “Imperfect” and I was wondering what the inspiration was behind that song?

Davey Suicide: Imperfect, I think you just get raised to think that we have to be this great flawless thing and it leads us on a path of never feeling like we are good enough.  I don’t know if its parents leading their kids that way, but anyway, I feel like you go through this whole psychological process of never feeling adequate and I think you realize later on, that the flaws are what make you distinct.  So that was kind of it and this was actually based off of my last long term relationship that I had. The things that I look back on now that I made a big deal about at the time really didn’t matter because the big picture was a lot better and I got tripped on the small stuff.  So that’s what that song is about.

Your new album is already recorded?

Umm pretty much, we are tweaking it, but it’s pretty much there.

Is there an approximate date of release of it?

We are looking at summer. It could be July or August.  Just kind of making sure that our path is clear for the best timing to put it out. That’s it.

How has your current tour with Twiztid going? I believe you have 3 dates left on this tour.

It’s been going great. We did a tour with these guys last year it was kind of like the introduction.  The jury was out whether they were into us or not.  This year it’s like no holds barred and its going over well. Every night has been little bit of a madhouse.

You have a headlining tour coming up after this?

Yes, that is what we are really looking forward to. A lot of our fans don’t get to see us play a full set. We’ve been doing support, 35 to 40 minutes maybe 25 minutes sometimes on this tour.  So this time we are going to get the best of the first and second records do some of the stuff off the EP.  We might even throw a new song or two in kind of figuring out if we can or not yet. It’s going to give them the chance to see the peaks and valleys and maybe we can showcase individually like Niko playing some solo stuff. I think it’s going to be so awesome we brought two really good bands out so I feel like the fans are going to be getting a fantastic bill really.

What do you think your biggest challenge is in this band?

I used to think making everyone happy, but I feel like we are pulling towards the same direction, so I think the biggest challenge now is creatively we are always striving for something greater that we are. So other than that, it’s the easiest this band has ever been as far as being on the same page just really fighting for the same thing.

If you could put together a dream tour of a couple bands who would it be?

We should have been on the Return of the Dreads tour this year. The fact that we didn’t get a call made us lose a couple nights of sleep. I think the big boys need to start giving the next of kin some, because they are not going to be around so they might as well pass the torch off to a band that is going to be able to take it up.  I think Korn and Zombie and In This Moment are bands we all like.  Rammstein and we obviously love Manson. I could see us working on a tour with Linkin Park or something weirder where its rock still or Five Finger Death Punch or Papa Roach.  So I think this new record has a little bit of an active rock feel. I think fans of all those bands will start realizing that there is something in it for them with us.

If you could one more person to your band, living or dead who would it be?

I’m happy the way it is. This is really hard for me to say but we had a couple member switches in the past but they were always for the better and I always felt like we had some inadequacies with who we had at the time. I feel like now we have this energy thing going on and everyone is on the same page.  I’m not one to think that we need something, I think the biggest thing is to get a little bit more help behind us.  That’s really it.  We can handle anything else on the creative end and execution side.

What gifts do you like your fans to bring you?

I personally like some of the healthier food. We have been getting sugar cookies and stuff.  You just can’t do that every day.  You can’t keep up.  Sometimes we get gift cards to like Chipotle and that is cool.  It’s nice when they make us gifts. I just think we would like stuff more useful to a touring band, like if they want to give us a gift card to Jiffy Lube for an oil change that would be real helpful if we are getting specific. I would just say don’t bring us sweets.  If you want bring us Naked juice, that would be cool.  Costco gift cards, we would be down with that.  We get that treasure chest full of candy and you find yourself driving those five hours on the highway thinking of something you can eat and then you are eating ten Snickers.  You just can’t do that.  So I would rather not even have that in our sight. I’m sure the rest of the guys feel the same way.   Power bars! We love those and Clif bars.

What is one essential thing you have to take on tour with you?

Umm…. I don’t know.  Our stage get up is essential and my IPod.  Oh, my laptop is essential. If I didn’t have my laptop I would be a lost guy in an amusement park looking for my parents.

Is there anything you would like to pass on to your fans?

We have a new record coming out. This record is fucking head over heels better than, well we love our first two albums, but we go back and say we could have done this…but I think our first two albums were awesome the way they were. They were exactly where we were as a band sound sonically, songwriters. This album is a step up and we are just really pumped. We have been battling with a lawsuit with a former record label for a year and you know it’s the frustration that comes from that, has been easier knowing we have fans that love what we do. It’s also made us fight farther and take it farther than we ever would. A lot of bands that already fought this label gave up a long time ago. We are not giving up and I think that’s completely attesting to the fact that we have a really, really supportive core to this band. I just want to thank everyone for having our backs. One day they will know the story, but for now that’s all you’re going to get.
