Idaho Falls’ Pinebreaker

Idaho Falls' Pinebreaker

Mellow but tough, sweet but raw, clean but dirty all at the same time. What better words than that to describe the debut EP just released by Idaho Falls locals, Pinebreaker.

Pinebreaker is a three piece, post-hardcore group formed in Idaho Falls, ID. The sound created by lungs, guitar and drums is immensely impressive and almost unbelievable that they are only three people. Coma Wolf is the first studio release from the band, released on September 15, 2017 via Arborist Records. The strength of the vocals, the sweet tone to the guitar and the heavy beats of the drums bring the listener in, making the six tracks on Coma Wolf seem too short.

Consisting of married couple, Gary Becker (guitar) and Saige Becker (vocals), and drummer Cole Withers, one would almost expect something completely different. They break away from the traditional husband-wife performers. They have an original sound that complements their strengths as a group. While listening to this album it seems the guitar sings right along with Saige almost in a perfect harmony. With the drum beats reminiscent of a steady heartbeat, keeping the whole album flowing in unison.

Idaho Falls' PinebreakerComa Wolf tracks:

  1. Gravel Jaw
  2. Lunar Heat
  3. Sabre Tusk
  4. Thistle King
  5. Polar Rot
  6. Coma Wolf

The first track, “Gravel Jaw”, gives the listener a smooth transition into the world of Pinebreaker. Opening up with a strong and steady beat. The vocals bring out the rawness of the track.

Bringing out a force left unnoticed in the first two tracks, “Sabre Tusk” introduces screams and shouts from the vocals. A refreshing taste of anger mixed with sweetness.

The album finishes with a track in its namesake, “Coma Wolf.” It starts out soft and lamenting. Imagine standing out on a cliff, feeling the breeze. That’s what the gentle guitar strums feel like. Then imagine being swept up and carried gently down the cliff to the ground below, that’s the vocals. A strong finish that leaves the listener hoping for those 90’s hidden tracks at the end.

Overall this album is genuine, emotional and beautiful. A work of art in its own right. Rating a 5/5 for being something that really sparks an interest in the listener. Pinebreaker’s first release to their fans will not disappoint.
