Historian’s Expanse

Historian's Expanse
Expanse is the third album from Historian, which is a magical musical project from Chris Karman. The band name comes from Karman’s encyclopedia of musical knowledge all up in his head, something he often impresses people with. According to the press release for this album, Expanse is somewhat of a finishing touch on the previous release from this band. However, you don’t need to have heard that release to enjoy the 10-songs that grace this one.

“Small Compromise” begins with the beautiful sounds of piano, leading to a full orchestral sound. It’s a blend of instruments that distract you from the world around you and brings you into the music, full on. You can’t turn away. This song is like a clock ticking away.

Much like that first song, this album is about time. Time is fleeting. Time is measurable yet immeasurable. These songs are timeless, but who knows what the future holds.

Melancholic, moody, but full of life- that is the sound of Historian. “Here And Then” sounds like something you might dance to at the goth club, with a musical tone almost The Cure-like, yet the vocals remain soft and sad.

You’ll find it difficult to pick a favorite song from this album. It has a sound that blends Halsey with the music from It’s Just Craig’s Dark Corners. Mysterious and melodic, sad and hypnotic. No less than a far star LP.
