Garbage Rolled Into The Fillmore Detroit!

Written By: Karie Okerstrom

When you mention the band Garbage, you either get “oh I remember that one song…something about a stupid girl” or “oh yeah, I’m only happy when it rains, right?” But Garbage have come a long, long way since those two monster hits propelled their 1994 self-titled debut effort to over four million record sales.  Twenty-two years later, Garbage rolled into the Fillmore Detroit to support their sixth studio album, Strange Little Birds.

The Fillmore Detroit was buzzing while the sold out crowd awaited the opening notes of “Sometimes” – the opening track off of Strange Little Birds.  The set featured songs from all six records – including four from the latest.  Shirley Manson was electric from the start.  Her distinctive vocals echoed through the historic theater as if she hadn’t aged a bit over the past two decades.  Butch Vig’s signature drum beats led the way for the mesmerizing guitar and keyboard work of Steve Marker and Duke Erikson.  Garbage was back but it seemed like they had never left.

It had been twenty-two years since the release of the debut record and the set list, coincidentally, comprised of twenty-two songs.  Garbage blasted through their well-known hits like “Push It”, “Only Happy When It Rains” and “Stupid Girl” but it was the more obscure songs that seemingly won the crowd over.  Manson’s vocals on “Cherry Lips” and “Bleed Like Me” were simply amazing.  The new songs, “Sometimes”, “Blackout”, “Empty” and “Even Though Our Love is Doomed” fit seamlessly into the impressive set list.

When it was all said and done, the Detroit crowd experienced one of the best shows of 2016.  Garbage was impressive from start to finish.  They haven’t aged one bit and that is reflected in their music.  After selling millions of records over two decades, the band isn’t quite through yet.
