131 was a huge 2016 release for Emarosa; the band has reworked four of its best tracks for the EP 131 Reimagined. Each song is twisted in delightful new ways, taking the band far outside its known genre.
“One Car Garage”—Bradley Walden’s voice is smoother than a tub of Land of Lakes on this track that has been given a generous tempo change. The angst of the original version has been replaced by synths that are still “tangled up in hope.”
“Helpless”—The mask of jazz has been removed to reveal the fragility and sadness embedded within this tune. The piano is the perfect careful partner to Walden’s silken voice here.
“Miracle”—Where the original stood on the verge of alt-rock glory, this track now sizzles with an R&B vibe fans have been waiting for years for from Walden. The sparse beats are the ideal balance to the deliberate lyrics of this song.
“Blue”—The earnestness of this “apology” is hauntingly clear on this striped down version that is “unstable” yet poignant. The backing track cleverly mimics the instability of the narrator’s psyche.
Enjoy the EP as a whole, then listen to each pair side-by-side when it comes out September 15.
Emarosa will be heading out on a small club tour to support the EP. Go here for tickets.
