Combichrist Pulverizes Detroit

The Combichrist North American Tour rolled into St. Andrews Hall in Detroit on a chilly Sunday night. The four bands were ready to create havoc on the city.

First, was New York City’s Echo Black, who hit the stage in a fury.   The four piece band, led by singer Danny Blu and backed up by Felix Skiver on guitar, Rob Gnarly on bass and Billy Long on drums, never stopped moving on the cramped stage.  They opened up the set with their debut single “Burn Another Day” which features Davey Suicide.

Echo Black was full of energy: Gnarly jumping off the stage to play in the audience, and Blu joining him too.  They connected with the fans and truly put on an energetic show. They are a band to keep your eye on and make sure to catch a show on their next tour.

Funeral pop duo of MXMS, singer  Ariel Levitan and keyboardist Jeremy Dawson were up next. Levitans clear voice and chilling lyrics carried out throughout the eager crowd.  Those in attendance weren’t ready for what they were hearing, whispering to each other “Wow she is really good!”  Although I don’t have a complete set list, they played “OMG” with the lyrics and video playing on a large screen to enthrall the audience.

The Birthday Massacre was up next, it was the last night on the North American Tour before they head back to Canada.  They put on a great show; they have so much energy and had a great time on stage.   Chibi (Vocals) engaged the audience, one minute she is growling in the mic, the next sporting a giant smile!  Backing her is Rainbow-guitar, M. Falcore–guitars, Rhim-drums, Owen –synthesizers, Nate Manor–bass

They are touring in support of their 2014 release, Superstition and they played three songs off this album and a mix of the last seven albums.

The crowd was an interesting mix of devoted fans:  one man telling me he followed them on their European tour and the last five United States shows, another girl came to the show from Dallas, TX, and another girl sang along with evey song and was brought to tears in an emotional moment.  The fans have an amazing connection with the band and will travel far to see them.

In support of their 2014 release We Love You, Combichrist members Andy LaPlegua- vocals, Joe Letz- drums, Z. Marr-electronics, Eric 13-guitar, and Brent Ashley- bass, made the second Michigan stop on their North American Tour. Their industrial metal sound whipped the moshing crowd at St. Andrews Hall into a frenzy.  Playing many of their fan favorites from five of their studio albums, Combichrist left their Detroit fans battered, bruised and satisfied.

Somehow, the band continued to play with the same intensity and adrenaline while their crew, and even band members, disassembled various parts of the drum kit and tossed them into the crowd.  The equipment was returned to the band in good-natured fun with the help of Echo Black’s Gnarly.

Combichrist was described to a “T” by a fan “To be honest, it was so rave-ish, I actually kept thinking about that scene in Blade where they’re at the rave and everyone’s all dancing and then the blood starts raining from the sprinklers….”

It was a great show that left all four of these bands with many new fans.
